For general tanks or for fish in rocky habitats. (to be avoided with discus and scalars whose biotope is rather plants and roots). In a reef tank, in addition to live rocks: colonization in a few months. The very rough appearance of this product has caused some aquarists to fear injury to fish. It seems to us that this is a non-issue when we see the agility of cichlids and marine fish and their ability to move at full speed in the middle of the decor. The only precaution to take is to leave a clear passage behind the scenery and to avoid dead ends during construction (a fish could be blocked by a pursuer). For us, this very cut-out aspect is a positive choice because it creates refuges (even tiny ones) where several successive generations of babies can survive because they are protected from the bigger ones. By making a smoother, rounder product, we would have eliminated all of these life niches. A very important porosity, specially studied, with cavities, cracks and very many open pores, makes it possible to shelter a whole micro-fauna. Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria find a favorable environment here. Your entire decor is transformed into a living environment, reducing nitrites and nitrates. Close-up photo: magnification of a section of a rock – part 5 cm long We can see cracks, which go deep into the rock and which communicate with a whole network of cavities of 100 to 500 µ. These cavities are themselves lined with open pores of 20 to 100 µ. The purification bacteria which have a size of 1.2 to 1.5 µ can thus develop to the heart of the material with a good supply of substances to be degraded.
