Nitrites are considered the most widespread pollutant. They are produced by the oxidation of ammonia or come from agricultural, urban or industrial waste. In freshwater aquaculture and aquariums nitrites are very toxic to fish as they cause asphyxiation. Nitrites must be kept at a very low concentration, below 0.1 mg/L because they are toxic and carcinogenic for humans and animals.
